Self-inflicted October Surprise: The Story of Vivek Ramaswamy

On October 19, 2026, a PAC affiliated with the Vivek Ramaswamy campaign for governor of Ohio aired a 57 second commercial featuring Donna Aruther the mother of Amy Acton, Ramasamy's opponent. In the ad, somber music plays in the background as Arthur reads out the following script:

“My name is Donna Arthur and I’m Amy Acton’s mother. I worked at Children and Family Service Association, building one of the first two sexual abuse programs in America.

I love my daughter, but when I saw her lying about her opponent—and it’s not easy for a mother to say this, but Amy has a serious problem.

She is a liar. She lies about her past. She says she grew up living in a tent. None of that is true. She’s lied her entire life.

My daughter needs help, and she can’t help you if she needs help herself. People can change, but first they have to tell the truth, and my daughter still isn’t doing that.

Don’t vote for people who lie. Don’t let her become your governor. If you think she’ll make your life better, you’re fooling yourself. It will only get worse.”

This ad was a standalone. I was able to find a Politifact article  that did an extensive research on Aruther's background. What they found is that Aruther has many skeletons in her closet. Recently, she was convicted of animal neglect though that conviction was vacated and she is awaiting retrial. Furthermore, they found that Aruther and her husband Cledith, were convicted of felony deception in 1996. More importantly, though, the article proved that Cledith and Donna likely perpetrated severe abuse against Acton and her brother, Phil Stearns. The article includes a statement from Stearns in which he alleges abuse and further, the article dug up that a warrant was issued for Cledith's arrest in 1978, alleging he raped a 12-year-old girl (Acton was 12 in 1978). There is no indication this warrant was ever served or that Cledith faced trial. Overall, this article showed that Cledith and Donna are untrustworthy individuals who may be guilty of serious, unpunished crimes.

I believe this ad was attempting to appeal to authority to persuade. As a society, we tend to view mothers as authority figures, particularly regarding their children. When one's own mother condemns them in some way, society views that being one of the worst social indictments one can sustain. “This person's actions were so terrible their own mother couldn't stand by them” in essence. This is the association principle in action. We associate mothers as authority figures regarding their children therefore when mothers make statements about their children, we tend to place more weight on those statements than we would most. Overall, even when you factor the longer length which is not ideal for television and is especially not ideal for social media, there was some rhyme and reason to Ramaswamy’s decision to air this, provided you also do not factor Clideth and Donna’s untrustworthiness and history of facing serious allegations.

This sort of ad (a political ad in which someone’s family comes out to condemn them) is rare but not unheard of. In 2018, Republican Rep, Paul Gosar's siblings all came to endorse his opponent. I will say this ad is noticeably darker compared to previous ads of the sort. The target demographic of this ad was swing voters in Ohio and committed Republican voters who want to see Acton dragged through the mud more. This ad plays on the stereotype that mothers are the ultimate authorities regarding their children, although that is not why I consider this ad offensive. I consider it offensive because it was deeply wrong of the Ramasamy campaign to platform an old, mentally unwell woman whose sole mission in life is tearing down her daughter who has likely already suffered immensely because of her and her husband.

This ad has basically no strengths. Yes, as I went over in a previous section, there are technically some things going for it, but those are all completely negated by the weaknesses. The weakness of this ad is that Donna Aruther is not credible, and her being credible is the only strength that matters, therefore this ad has no strengths practically speaking and all weaknesses. However, it is highly memorable, just for the wrong reasons. This ad is memorable because it is just that bad. It is not bad in the sense that it is annoying like with the Carl’s Jr. “Maxxing” commercial over the summer. It is bad in the “this idea was wholly ill-convinced from the start” kind of way.” Finally, this ad was wholly ineffective as shown by Acton's major polling surge.

To conclude, what I learned from this assignment is that perhaps not attention is good attention. Even in the Trump era, it is still possible to get a lot of attention from a screw up and for that attention to hurt you. Just looking through the reactions, even Republicans were rather dismayed by this whole spectacle. Even Jon Husted, the Republican senator from Ohio running for re-election said he “would not have run the ad”. I am glad that this unambiguously shows that even in this era, one must possess at least a modicum of shame to be successful.
